4/23/24

The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), through its Vice Rector's Office for Institutional Relations, Culture and Equality, has organised a programme of activities to celebrate Spanish Language Day at the United Nations and International Book Day, which is celebrated on the 23rd of April. Through this programme, the University commemorates the importance of the Spanish language and of reading as a fundamental tool for personal and professional growth.

The activities began on the 17th and are taking place at UC3M and at other municipal and cultural entities that are collaborating in the programme.

On the 23rd of April, excerpts from works by Anne Sexton, Ana María Matute and Rosa Chacel will be read in the Ortega y Gasset building (17) on the Getafe campus. There will also be a book exchange. On the same day, the “Miradas de África” photographic exhibition will open in the Colmenarejo campus library.

On Wednesday the 24th, teaching staff and students from UC3M's Aula de las Artes (Arts Hall) will perform dramatised and whispered readings at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. The “The XII tables and social revolution” conference can also be followed virtually.

On Thursday the 25th, in building 17 of the Getafe campus, a film analysis will take place: “From the theatre stage (1978) to the cinema (1984)”. The session will address the similarities and differences between literature and cinema. A clown workshop for oral storytelling will take place in the same building. On the same day, on the Humanities esplanade of the Getafe campus, an excerpt from “Don Quixote” will be read in different languages. Finally, the book “Letters on socialism and democracy 1978-2000” will be presented at the Fernando de los Ríos Student Residence in Getafe.

Finally, on the 26th of April at the Madrid – Puerta de Toledo campus, the event “Y tú, ¿por qué vienes a la uni?” (“Why are you coming to uni?”) will take place, a critical conversation about universities in a context of polarisation, hyper-specialisation and fragmentation.

Throughout the week, donations of all kinds of books will be received in the library hall of the Leganés campus.
